Linoleum floor scratches can be shallow surface area scrapes and scratches or they can be deep tears that go all the way down to the surface of the subfloor. Fortunately, this is a fairly common occurrence and most people can repair linoleum floor scratches and tears with the help of a seam sealer.Oct 14, 2021

Small cuts and scratches can be permanently fused with liquid seam sealer, a clear compound that's available wherever vinyl flooring is sold. Clean the area with a soft cloth that's dipped in lacquer thinner, then squeeze in a thin bead of sealer. After the sealer has dried, the repair will be virtually invisible.

Plant-based adhesives are available for installing linoleum flooring. These include cellulose glue, rye flour paste, natural rubber glue and natural resin glue.

Seal the scratch, using superglue. The glue will prevent a tear from opening again. Alternatively, use epoxy putty to both seal and fill a deep scratch. Epoxy putty has two parts that are different colors; pinch off a small piece of putty and knead it in your hands until the colors of the two parts have blended evenly.

Take a quality car wax and a clean rag, working the wax into the scratch in circles. Fill the entire scratch with the wax, carefully wiping away any excess wax from the vinyl surrounding the area. After waxing, take a clean cloth and rub it gently over the area, ensuring a smooth and consistent finish.

Spread an even coat of flooring adhesive onto the underside of the linoleum with a putty knife. Flatten the linoleum down and roll it with a rolling pin or brayer to help affix it more securely. Wipe away any excess adhesive that may have bled out from under the edge of the linoleum using a damp rag.

The Glue-Down Option

If you want a permanent floor covering that won't lift and can withstand impacts, scratches and spills, you should glue down vinyl sheet or tile flooring. When glued vinyl wears out, you can usually lay a new floor directly over it.

Carefully remove the damaged Marmoleum and scrape any residual adhesive from the substrate. Adhere the insert piece using new adhesive and roll the edges flush using a seam roller. Remove any dried adhesive on the surface using mineral spirits followed by wiping with a damp cloth.
