A small fern with a magical reputation.

So named for the shape of its leaves, which are fan-shaped and resemble a half-moon. It is the only moonwort found in Britain - elsewhere it is often called "common moonwort" to distinguish it from other types.

The common honesty, Lunaria annua, has flowers of a variable colour, ranging from purple through magenta-pink to paler pink. magenta pink, with dark green, rather coarse leaves. I have a dark form, with purplish leaves and magenta pink flowers, sometimes sold as 'Chedglow'.

Your Mahogany Fern prefers bright indirect light but will adapt to lower light conditions. Keep out of direct sunlight, as it can burn the foliage. Water when the top 25% of the soil is dry.

Is Lunaria annua poisonous? Lunaria annua has no toxic effects reported.

Place in a dated envelope so you keep track of when the seeds were harvested. Put in an airtight tin and leave in a fridge at around 5 degrees and seeds should last a couple of years. If you aren't able to keep them in a fridge then a dry and cool shed will also suffice.Aug 31, 2016
