The usual size of a flag used at home is 3'x5'. A casket flag is 9-1/2'x5'. The table below shows the appropriate size flag to fly on flagpoles of several heights. According to Executive Order 10834, official flags (not personal flags) must meet these standards.

• Make Flag Wood Sign Base First, cut your 1×8 wood board to 12″ long with a miter saw or have your home improvement store make the cut for you. This DIY wooden American flag sign will be 7.25″ wide x 12″ long. Then, stain the wood board and allow to dry at least 24 hours.

• Apply paint to DIY Wooden American Flag Sign Use white paint or spray paint and apply multiple, light coats to the flag sign. Allow to fully dry and remove your vinyl stencil to reveal your wood flag sign!

• Both flag dimensions are for traditional flag proportions. I’ll break up the post to build Flag A first, then how to build Flag B. #10 biscuits or 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws. Approximate lumber cost $9 – (I purchased 4 – 1×4 furring strips and ripped them down to 1 1/2″ wide.) On 7 of the 37″ pieces, measure and mark over 14 7/8″.

• You can use the flag as a guide, take your time and be safe. Use some painters tape to protect the edge of the flag- and stain the edge of the plywood backer board on the left side and top (where you just cut).
