It could be that you are hanging too much weight on the anchors. Drywall and plaster are not designed to carry loads, so applying too much weight to a single point will cause the anchor to come loose. You may also run into trouble if the item you are attaching to the wall is too thick.

• Place a flat blade screwdriver across the opening of the drywall anchor. Make sure the head of the screwdriver is wider than the screw hole in the anchor. Tap the end of the screwdriver with a hammer to push the anchor all the way to the wall. Keep tapping until the anchor falls down behind the drywall.

The collar is a small circular piece of metal that holds the anchor in place, so that it cannot be pushed backward, out the other end of the wall. Be gentle when you attach the pliers. You don’t want to gouge the drywall. Try to avoid touching the drywall with the pliers.

The screwdriver shouldn’t be larger than the diameter of the wall anchor because you will want to be able to push it through the wall without making the hole bigger. You can also use a 1⁄4 in (0.64 cm) drill bit to drill out the insert.

Driving the screw into the anchor stretches the plastic so it can't be reused. However, if you purchase reusable anchors or take certain steps during your project, you might be able to salvage the anchors. In some areas, old plastic wall anchors can be recycled.Feb 5, 2019
