Trapping groundhogs doesn't have to be difficult. In fact, there's a few different options that work pretty well. Although groundhog is their official name, many people refer to them as woodchucks or whistle-pigs.

Groundhog Behavior

Activity: Groundhogs are diurnal (active during the day) from spring to fall. Most activity occurs during the early morning and early evening hours, at which groundhogs emerge from their burrows to gather food.

Many people believe that groundhogs come out of their dens during the night and look for food at night only. However, this is false, groundhogs are not nocturnal. In fact, they are very active during the day, but they still roam outside their dens in the night.

Block them out.

Surround your garden or yard with wire fencing that is at least 3 feet tall and goes at least 12 inches underground. Groundhogs won't be able to climb it, and if they run into it underground, they'll be forced to stop tunneling and to go elsewhere to set up camp.

Sprinkle blood meal, ground black pepper, dried blood, or talcum powder around the perimeter of your garden. You can try using hair clippings as well. Puree and strain hot peppers and garlic, mix them with water and enough liquid soap to make it stick, and spray it liberally around the garden.

Sprinkle a granular repellent to create a repelling barrier to drive/keep groundhogs out of problem areas. Spray a liquid repellent onto surfaces like plants, wood, grass or mulch to discourage gnawing, eating and digging.

• In Havahart® field tests, cantaloupe was the best bait for attracting groundhogs and woodchucks. Cut cantaloupe into 2" cubes, and rub the cantaloupe juice and rind throughout the inside and outside of the trap.

• Find a groundhog hole. The best place to set the trap is close to the entrance hole to the groundhog's burrow. To find the hole, look for a place where the dirt at the ground's surface is disturbed, and follow it to a small hole or caved-in spot.
