BWP Grade Plywood

This is “boiling waterproof" plywood, and it's also referred to as Marine plywood. It is completely waterproof.

IS MARINE PLYWOOD WATERPROOF? Whilst marine plywood isn't waterproof, it's a type of plywood which can deal with moisture. Contrary to what you'd expect, marine plywood is not in itself waterproof but rather a quality plywood made with waterproof glue.

The best pressure treated wood for decks is Select, #1 or #2 grade wood. Within all grades, there are planks that will be freer of blemishes and knots and may be called premium. Decking materials such as 2×6 and 5/4×6 frequently are of better-looking #1 and #2 lumber.

• Pressure treatment levels are expressed in pounds of preservative chemical infused per cubic foot of wood, and typical pressure treated lumber usually has a rating of 0.25 to 0.4 lbs. per cubic foot. Foundation-grade wood, by contrast, as a minimum treatment level of 0.60 lbs.

What is marine grade pressure treated lumber? Marine treated lumber, timber and piles are pressure-treated with higher concentrations of Wolman® CCA preservative to withstand the harsh exposures and destructive organisms common in marine environments. Retention levels range from 0.40 pcf for soil contact to 2.50 pcf for saltwater immersion.

To prepare it for harsh marine environments, wood is pressure treated with a combination of water and preservatives to keep pests away and slow the rate of decay. Different preservatives are suited for different applications and types of wood. Let’s go over some of the most common treatments you’ll see in marine lumber.

Pressure treated lumber has been synonymous with marine use for many years. The cost of marine-grade timbers compared to other types of materials can prove to be more economical, with a properly engineered seawall or retaining wall lasting up to 25 years when adequately maintained.

Marine timbers and posts are constructed from the heartwood of Southern Pine material, and then pressure treated to the rigid specifications necessary to qualify them for use in varying marine applications. Using an epoxy sealer is probably the most popular way to seal plywood against the elements. The epoxy is usually found in paint or spray forms. The advantage that epoxy provides is that it makes the plywood stronger, in addition to waterproof.

CDX Plywood is used primarily by contractors to build exterior walls and roofs. CDX plywood has one side veneer grade “C” and one side veneer grade “D”. The two are bonded together with glue which can withstand a little moisture.

• Pressure-treated lumber is divided into two grades, #1 and #2, based on the appearance and composition of the wood. #1 lumber, also called premium, is the higher grade, with very few knots, warps, or other blemishes. #2 lumber, also called standard, has a rougher, knottier look.

• Marine Lumber is a UV-stabilized marine grade polymer sheet with excellent resistance to sun and saltwater. Marine Lumber will not rot, delaminate, swell or splinter, and the matte texture requires no painting, finishing or maintenance.

• Pressure treated lumber is no stronger than untreated lumber. The difference between the two is that pressure treated lumber will resist the elements better than untreated, and so will maintain its integrity in conditions that would cause normal wood to rot.

• Pressure-treated wood and concrete are two commonly used building materials for exterior applications. However, setting the wood in concrete may create a situation that speeds wood rot. Pressure-treated wood will rot in concrete when exposed to wet conditions such as trapped water.
