The best of the synthetic varnishes is the polyurethane type; polyurethanes are clear, non-yellowing, and very tough. Other synthetic varnishes are the phenolics, used for exterior and some marine work, and the alkyds, often used in colored preparations.

The polyurethane coat requires at least three coats to give the table a perfect finish. But you can put more layers to make the table look glossy and shiny. Make sure that you give time to each coat to be dried up properly.

Don't wipe on too much at one time. Thin coats level out better and dry faster than thick ones. Most manufacturers recommend applying three coats, but I usually do more. After each coat dries for a few hours, scuff it lightly with 220-grit sandpaper and clean up the dust with a cloth moistened with denatured alcohol.

Place thick napkins or place mats at each table setting if people are eating there. The extra padding in "high traffic" sections of the table help ensure nothing gets dropped or dragged that damages the glass. Combined with the tablecloth and the film, the glass is very unlikely to ever scratch.

That's why, for the non-pro, I'd recommend an oil-based wipe-on polyurethane. I've used it on a number of projects—including tables—that I built for The New Yankee Workshop and for my own use. It offers great protection, has the look of a hand-rubbed oil finish, and is easy to apply.

• We do not dip, so refinishing veneer is no problem for us, except on some of the newer pieces that are veneered over particle board. Even some of those pieces can be refinish, but it has to be done a certain way. The older furniture is veneered over a solid wood substrate which is never a problem to be refinished.

• Another good choice of wood for a dining table top is maple, a dense wood that takes to staining very well. It can be very stable if you have a wide table top. However be prepared to shell out a lot because this wood is expensive too, being slightly difficult to cut and requiring a lot of sanding to get a good finish.

For a very durable finish and one that needs to be very tough, say on a kitchen table, coffee table or end table etc, 2 to 3 coats of varnish should be enough on the top, with 1 to 2 coats on the legs/base. For chairs, benches, chests and other such pieces, 1 to 2 coats should do the trick.
