Insert a border spade straight down in the ground directly where the lawn meets the gravel area; repeat along the entire edge and 4 inches out from the first cut line. Roll up the sod layer, including all the grass and roots layers, and reserve it to lay after installing the edging.

One of the best ways to help protect the edges of your asphalt driveway is through landscaping. After the driveway is installed, consider installing new topsoil to the height of the driveway. Another option is to use a harder landscaping material such as rock or stone.

One option for dividing property lines down a shared driveway is to install chain link fencing. A chain link fence is a relatively inexpensive fence to have installed, and can readily be placed over asphalt. Asphalt is soft enough to allow fence posts to be sunk into the driveway.

If the edge of the driveway is so damaged that part of it is missing, then you may need to add new asphalt to the area to repair it.
